PREVALÊNCIA DE DIABETES MILLUTS AUTORREFERIDA EM IDOSOS DA COMUNIDADE: RESULTADOS DA COORTE ELSI-BRASIL 2015-2016

Abstract

To estimate the prevalence of self-reported diabetes and analyze associated factors in community-dwelling older people in Brazil. A cross-sectional study based on data from the baseline of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil). The present study analyzed data from participants aged 60 years or older. The dependent variable was self-reported diabetes mellitus. Independent variables included sociodemographic aspects (age, skin color, education, living arrangement with spouse) and lifestyle factors (smoking, leisure-time physical activity, nutritional status). Statistical analysis used Poisson regression, considering complex sample adjustments. The study included 5,432 participants, revealing an overall prevalence of diabetes of 18.9% (95% CI: 17.3-20.6). In multivariate analysis, significant factors associated with diabetes were identified, including former smokers (PR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.04-1.48, p = 0.018), overweight (PR = 2.47, 95% CI: 1.78-3.43, p < 0.001), and normal weight (PR = 1.79, 95% CI: 1.27-2.53, p = 0.001). The study revealed a high prevalence of diabetes. The analysis showed significant associations between diabetes and factors such as past smoking, overweight, and normal weight. These results underscore the importance of weight control and healthy lifestyle habits in preventing diabetes in older people.
